Students wishing to learn oil painting techniques may seek satisfaction by painting wet into wet, a method where oils are applied like watercolour washes.

Wet into wet is an art technique that entails working wet paint into wet paint. By applying a wet wash, or “glaze,” interesting effects and happy accidents can be achieved by adding colours to the wet surface and watching them bleed into each other. Using wet into wet techniques can be used to suggest reflections in water, skies, mists and create soft tonal areas.

Art Instruction for Teaching Oil Painting Techniques

The art teacher may first show the students paintings featuring wet into wet techniques in oils. The objectives of the lesson may then be outlined, which are the following:

  • To explain what wet into wet painting is
  • To practice wet into wet by introducing one colour into another whilst still wet
  • To incorporate the wet into wet technique into a painting

Objectives in Art

The objectives must be SMART, which stands for: is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound. Differentiation is supplied by experimenting with more than two colours and by introducing mood into a painting by using the wet into wet techniques to skies, water, mists and other textures.

Oil Painting Tips

The art teacher may demonstrate the technique in front of the class to spur a question and answer session and to encourage volunteers to have a go. The aim oft the lesson is to build confidence by experimentation.

Resources and Art Materials

  • Size 6 sable brush
  • Small bottle of linseed oil
  • Primed paper or card
  • Red and blue oil paint
  • Oil painting palette
  • Rags
  • Artists’ white spirits

Fine Art Painting with Linseed Oil

Red oil paint is diluted with linseed oil and applied onto the painting surface in a thin wash. Students may explore how colours blend in chaotic ways by:

  • Dropping a diluted red colour onto the wet surface and watch how it bleeds out
  • Applying the colour onto the wet surface with a brush
  • To experiment wet into wet with other colour combinations

Wet into wet can be daunting for the beginner. Finding opportunities for praise, regardless of how small will help build confidence in painting.

How to Paint Wet Into Wet

More able students may further explore painting wet into wet by completing a painting where wet glazes of oil paint may add mood to a painting. This can be seen in the paintings of Lake Windermere in the Lake District and Castle Moyle in Scotland.
