Keep it simple when teaching young children to draw. Stick to the basics. Coloring pages are a good source of inspiration. An introduction to using the computer mouse.

At the bottom of this article I point to some useful links tp coloring pages with humerous mice.

When teaching young children to draw I focus on their understanding of the basics such as

I like them to know there is a foreground and background

I like them to be able to say

When they are very young, I do not even think about explaining the nature of texture yet.

I am keen for them to go back and rescue their outlines when the picture is finished. The quality of their outlines becomes important when their artwork is to be scanned.

Because I want them to see the relationships of various shapes to each other without the added complication of texture and colour, I often use cartoon-coloring pages as resource material. These pages are simple and big enough for the kids to see relationships of shapes easily. They are also often funny and the kids enjoy the content.

When teaching kids about the computer mouse I decided to have them draw a mouse and divide it down the middle. They were asked to colour the mouse a different colour on each side. This drawing is to act like a map when they get to the computer . They will be asked to explore remembering that Lizzie Right Click is for Navigating and Dizzies Left Click is for Activating. The scroll roller in the middle is the nose. Can you guess what the tail is?

To begin with, I show them many Cartoon Mouse Colouring Pages. They would like to be allowed to colour them of course – but – they can colour their own once it is drawn.

I walk them through the construction. We make the oval in the air first and then draw it on to the page. The head, nose, eyes and other attrivutes follow. By outlining with felt tipped pens and filling in the body and background with thick crayons, the drawing evolves to be simple and effective.
